Kildare is a small town located 50km from Dublin and 90 km from Athlone. It is known worldwide for its horse racing and, due to this, it hosts the Irish National Stud. In this town, there are also the Japanese Gardens and the Kildare Village, important points for tourism and shopping, respectively. On the last Friday, AIT offered a trip to these places, and it was amazing!

Irish National Stud/Haras Nacional Irlandês

The Irish National Stud has a good reputation and tradition in the breeding of racehorses, being one of the leading studs in the world. Its horses cost thousands of euros!

The Japanese Gardens are located inside the Irish National Stud. It's a trail that tells us all the phases of an human life. There are lots of elements of the oriental culture, such as bonsais, monuments, and typical plants from Japan. It has an atmosphere of peace and serenity, and allows you to feel close to the nature.

The Kildare Village is an shopping outlet, with shops of well-known franchises that sells their products at discount prices.

Kildare é uma pequena cidade localizada à 50km de Dublin e 90km de Athlone. É conhecida mundialmente por suas corridas de cavalo e, devido a isso, é sede do Haras Nacional Irlandês . Nesta cidade, também há os Jardins Japoneses e a Kildare Village, pontos importantes para turismo e compras, respectivamente. Na última sexta-feira, AIT ofereceu um passeio a esses lugares, e foi incrível!

O Haras Nacional Irlandês tem uma boa reputação e tradição na criação de cavalos de corrida, sendo um dos haras líderes no mundo. Seus cavalos custam milhares de euros!

O Jardim Japonês está localizado dentro do Haras Nacional irlandês. É uma trilha que nos conta todas as fases de uma vida humana. Há muitos elemntos da cultura oriental, como bonsais, monumentos and plantas típicas do Japão. Possui uma atmosfera de paz e serenidade, e nos permite ficarmos próximo à natureza.

Athlone

Athlone is a town located on the border of Counties Westmeath and Roscommon, and also two provinces Connaught and Leinster. It is often referred to as 'The Heart of Ireland' as it is directly in the centre of the country, on the River Shannon. The origin of its name is due to the Gaelic name ‘Baile Atha Luain’ and it means ‘Town of Luan’s Ford’. With a population of 20,183 inhabitants, Athlone is the most populous city of County Westmeath (although the capital is Mullingar) and the 17^th most populous in Ireland. 

The town was established by Viking groups. During Ireland’s long history, it was important as a strategic point because of its location and the Athlone Castle was the main responsible for this. Today, it is one of the most popular touristic points of the town, with a preserved medieval building and a visitor centre. The River Shannon is also a popular touristic point, which attracts many water enthusiasts. There are cruises on the river by the Viking ship and pavements all along the board to walk along. Lough Ree, just north of the town, is one of the largest lakes on the Shannon and provides the perfect location for water activities such as angling, water skiing, wind surfing and sailing.

Athlone is wealthy culturally as well. The Luan Gallery is located alongside the Shannon’s board and contains a contemporary art permanent exhibition.  There are three theatres: The Dean Crowe Theatre, The Little Theatre and The Passionfruit Theatre. Among the old buildings, there are churches, such as the Saint Peter’s Cathedral and Saint Mary’s Church, many monuments, and, mainly, the bridge built over the Shannon.

Golden Island Shopping Centre

To relax, there are lots of options in Athlone. One of the options to relax is by going to the pub, which offers an Irish traditional atmosphere, with typical music and variety of beer and games, such as pool and darts. Sean’s Bar, located on the banks of the Shannon, it is listed as the oldest pub in Ireland and Europe by Guinness Book of World Records. There are two shopping centres: Golden Island Shopping Centre and Athlone Town Centre, which have a huge number of shops, cafés and restaurants. In the first one, there is also a cinema with 3D screens. Burgess Park is a place to stay near the nature and it is located on the Shannon’s border. There are three nightclubs, a bowling centre and many places to practise physical exercises as well.  In fact Athlone has world class sports facilities and was named European Town of Sport in 2014. Facilities include the AIT International Arena which includes Ireland’s first Olympic standard Indoor Athletics track.

As you see, although Athlone is a small town, there are several places to know and have fun and leisure. It’s a very nice place to live!!

A origem do seu nome é devido ao seu nome em gaélico, 'Baile Atha Luain', cujo significado é 'Cidade do Rio de Luain'. Com uma população de 20.183 habitantes, Athlone é a cidade mais populosa do condado de Westmeath (ainda que a capital seja Mullingar) e a 17ª mais populosa da Irlanda.

A cidade foi fundada por grupos Vikings. Ao longo da história da Irlanda, ela foi um ponto estratégico por causa de sua localização, e o Castelo de Athlone é o principal responsável por isso. Hoje, este é um dos pontos turísticos mais populares da cidade, com uma construção medieval preservada e um centro de visitantes. O rio Shannon também é um ponto turístico importante, que atrai muitos interessados em atividades aquáticas. Há passeios no rio através do barco Viking e calçadas ao longo da margem para caminhada. Lough Ree, ao norte da cidade, é um dos maiores lagos na região do rio Shannon e possui uma localização perfeita para a prática de atividades aquáticas, como pesca, esqui aquático, windsurf e passeios.

Athlone também é rica culturalmente. A Luan Gallery está localizada às margens do Shannon e contém uma exibição permanente de arte contemporânea. Para lazer, há muitas opções em Athlone. Uma delas é ir a pubs, que oferecem uma atmosfera tradicional irlandesa, com música típica e variedade de cervejas e jogos, como sinuca e dardo. Sean's Bar, localizado próximo ao Shannon, é citado como o pub mais antigo da Europa pelo Guinness Book. Há dois shopping centers*: Golden Island Shopping Centre* e Athlone Town Centre, que possuem um grande número de lojas, cafés e restaurantes. No primeiro, também há um cinema com telas em 3D. Burgess Park é um lugar para ficar perto natureza e está próximo às margens do Shannon. Há um boliche e muitos lugares para praticar exercícios físicos - de fato, Athlone possui instalações esportivas de classe mundial e foi nomeada como a Cidade Europeia do Esporte de 2014. Dentre estas instalações, está a AIT International Arena, que possui a primeira pista de atletismo de padrão olímpico da Irlanda.

Como pode ver, ainda que Athlone seja uma cidade pequena, há muitos lugares para conhecer, divertir-se e ter lazer. Aqui é um ótimo lugar para viver!!

Ireland is a gorgeous country for students from all over the world due to its receptivity with foreign people and the high quality teaching of its universities and institutes of technology. Among these education institutions, Athlone Institute of Technology is one of the most important of them. Established in Athlone, a town in the middle of the country, AIT receives plenty of students from different countries and promotes a good interactivity between the Irish culture and them. Also, the institute has a great infrastructure for rooms and laboratories, a good education system, a huge number of clubs and societies and it gives you a chance to play so many sports, strengthening the contact between these people from different cultures and lifestyles.
